The Power of our Town Histories. Nineteen towns make up Delaware County, which stared being settled by Europeans as early as the 1740’s. The original make-up was of Scotch-Irish or German descent. The county itself was officially designated in 1797. By 1860 the population had reached 40,000 and has hovered there ever since.
Two hundred and twenty odd years later, some would say much looks the same while one can still see the rise and fall of towns that mirror the economies of the times. There must have been something special going on here as Delaware County in it’s heyday boasted over 10,000 summer guests at its hotels and boarding homes. Pretty powerful stuff.
